Fiber Network Technician

The days of copper wire are largely over, at least for communications purposes. Modern telephone, internet and cable TV systems are carried on fiber optic systems, which require a completely different set of skills. The skilled technicians who install and repair these systems provide the modern digital economy with its backbone. Their earnings are comparable with those of many other skilled tradespeople.
According to figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2011, the median annual salary for a fiber optic technician in the United States was $51,720, or $24.87 per hour. The lowest-paid 10 percent of technicians reported incomes of $27,480 or lower, while the highest-paid 10 percent earned $74,890 or higher. In hourly terms, that's $13.21 or below for entry level positions, and $36.01 for the most senior. As with most trades, pay also varies by location and workplace.

Geography
Some states pay more for fiber optic technicians. There are many reasons for this, including cost of living or simple supply and demand. The highest-paying state for fiber installers is New York, which rates highly on both fronts. The average salary in that state was $65,550, or $31.51 per hour. Alaska, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont also ranked among the highest-paying states. Georgia trailed the rest of the nation with an average pay of $35,190, or $16.92 per hour. South Carolina, Alabama, Wisconsin and Nebraska were also among those with the lowest average wages.
